Vintage Photo - Newburgh Landing, Newburgh, Orange County, NY (1900s)

As authors R.J. Murphy and D.D. VanBuren point out in their book, Historic Beacon, the Newburgh Ferry System and Long Dock have been in place since the 1700s. As such, it’s seen its fair share of unique ferries.

The photos of Newburgh-Beacon’s ferries in this post were all once the property of H.A. Decker.

One of the photos clearly shows the City of Newburgh Ferry. According to Murphy and VanBuren’s book (p.49), it sailed on the river from 1879 until 1939.

Another photo features the Robert Fulton.

As for the ferries in the other photos, I am not 100% sure of their names.

The authors mention several ferries in their book but I was unable to match the photos in their tome to the ones in the late Mr. Decker’s collection.

For more information about the Newburg-Beacon Ferry, I’d recommend either purchasing the book or making contact with area historians. Good resources in that regard are the Newburgh Restoration and the Beacon Historical Society.
